Wahoo!!

I got my laptop today. It's receiving a wireless connection that is unsecured. Does that mean that whoever actually owns the connection can see my info? It may seem like a stupid question to most of you, but honestly I don't know. Also, is one of those pad things that goes underneath it necessary? I'm really not geeky enough to own one of these things. I hope I don't break it or something.
My sister -- not the married one -- is turning 30 this year and she wants us to go to Las Vegas for the occasion. I think we can afford the flight and the hotel, but I don't know if we can afford Vegas. I'm not sure what I think of the idea, I told her I couldn't be sure until the end of the month. I'm going back to school and don't know how it's going to be.

The pads that go underneath it are so you can sit it in your lap without burning off your pubic hair. Vulgar, yes, but laptops get really hot, and if you have it on in your lap for a long time, well, there could be issues. But if you're not gonna be sitting it in your lap, you should be fine.

As for the unsecured network, yes, they can see your computer name & the MAC of your wireless card. They can also see anything in any shared folder you have (which is not a problem if you don't turn filesharing out, it's off by default in winXP and linux, I assume also true on Macs). Theorectically, since it is unsecured, someone could pick up the information you send wirelessly, but if they haven't secured their network, I doubt they would be tech savvy enough to pull that off, as it requires packet sniffers and all sorts of useless equipment/software.

Vegas is very cheap, supposedly, as long as you don't do the gambling. Not sure how strong your resistance is, so let that be your guide.
